Digital media 1.1
What is a personal media profile?
A personal media profile is another representation of a digital portfolio, but instead than just showcasing content, it may show testimonials, blogs or experiences which are relevant to the area the profile is aimed at.
A social media profile relates to having a Facebook, Instagram etc profile, which in this context relates to personal and social content, with no reference to employment purposes.
A digital portfolio is online, or even a portfolio of work on a DVD. It could hold a showreel, or pieces of work in an electronic format.
Why do I need a personal media profile?
In a digital portfolio you include content that relates to your area of interest. This would be any work that I have done in digital media. Each post that is done on the digital portfolio must have images in them with detailed annotations that explain what the image is. This is so the person who is reviewing your work can easily understand it. On the portfolio there must be a variety of work and also an entire project that has been completed. For me this would be something like the campaign for change for unit 21. There must also be extracts from textbooks so that a viewer can understand where you are getting all of this from. When it comes to presenting your portfolio the best way to do it is through either a PDF or PowerPoint with high resolution so the work is easy to see and also to make sure to compress the large files. The most important thing about your own personal portfolio is that you check your individual course requirements and you include them onto it. Finally in order to get people interested in your portfolio you have to consider if it’s attention grabbing, does it show my ideas and development and does it flow.
Examples of personal media profiles: video and animation, graphic design, web design, photography.
Strengths and weaknesses of digital portfolios
Examples of digital portfolios: studio fiexen, RoandCo, active theory, locomotive, lusion
Report
Studio fiexen
Strengths: the explosion of colour and projects showcased on this site. There is also a talk section where you can ask studio fiexen a question which makes it very interactive and makes people want to know more about the studio.
No weaknesses
RoandCo
Strengths: The team offer beautifully crafted design, branding and creative direction solutions to a roster of clients predominantly in the fashion, beauty, tech and lifestyle sectors. The projects are presented in an almost magazine-like fashion. Allowing the viewer to cycle through split screen images, animated web presentations and full screen video.
Weaknesses: The complete lack of information on any project is a little irritating, but RoAndCo has created a well-crafted, memorable user experience nonetheless.
Active theory
Strengths: the active theory portfolio website is like entering a whole new world. The design embraces a moody, Blade Runner aesthetic throughout. They say that everything on the website works together beautifully. The studio keeps things clean for its project pages, with each example featuring a full-screen animation overlaid with short blurb and relevant links to further information, including detailed case studies hosted on Medium.
No weaknesses
Locomotive
Strengths: Playful animations bring the design to life throughout the site (not just on the homepage). It feels like effort and thought have gone into every element, from the quirky treatment of the hamburger menu to the unexpected animations on the About page.
No weaknesses
Lusion
Strengths: The site is full of delightful design touches, including a glowing dot that follows your cursor around, and an About page that overlays a running figure that responds to mouse events.
Weaknesses: It's a little disorienting at times, but entirely appropriate.
