The apprenticeship route

Jonny cannot make up his mind whether to go to university or complete an apprenticeship with an employer. He is looking to eventually work in the digital/ media industry. Can you produce an outline report for Jonny detailing what he needs to do to follow the apprenticeship route?

For Jonny to follow the apprenticeship route he must first decide what it is he actually wants to do. There are many different areas in the digital media industry that he might want to do and to find out what he wants he can use this website. https://www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship

This website is very useful as it offers a wide range of apprenticeship routes that Jonny would be    Interested in in the media industry. This website allows you to look for apprenticeships within a certain amount of miles which would be beneficial for Jonny who wouldn’t have to travel for a while then. The website also allows Jonny to select the different types of apprenticeships. The different types include advanced, higher, degree or intermediate. This website offers a better understanding on what these types are. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/higher-and-degree-apprenticeships this website also tells you what choosing these routes get you and what levels they are available at.

Different apprenticeships have different skill requirements that Jonny would need to find out before he applies to them. Jonny has chosen to go down the route of digital media http://creativeskillset.org/who_we_help/young_creative_talent/ways_creative_industries/creative_%20skillset_apprenticeships

If Jonny is still wanting more information about these apprenticeships then this website will tell him everything he needs to know. On here he can find things such as the different entry requirements. This website also tells you about the salary of the apprenticeships. It will also help him apply for apprenticeships by giving him different links that he can follow. It also provides him with a phone number that he can use to get into direct contact with the national apprenticeships help desk. This website also gives h8m a detailed understanding on what the different levels of apprenticeships are and what qualifications are needed for each level. Overall this website is probably the most beneficial for him as it offers a wide range of information and covers every asset needed for some one to apply for an apprenticeship.

1.4 repurposing clip to advert

 Video clip to advert

This is a screenshot of my Coca Cola advert and a short clip that I created for it for unit 20. I converted this clip to make it become part of my Coca Cola advert. This isn’t the only video clip i have, I have many other clips that I put all together to make it into one advert.

I did this through an app called viva video. To turn all of these small videos into one advert i firstly had to crop down the videos so the length of the videos isn’t too long as there was only a certain amount of time that the advert could run for. I had to crop down the videos on the app and I did that by adding the videos onto the clip edit and using the crop tool to drag the tool to where I wanted the video to be cut. I had to do this for every video. In order to get the videos onto this app I had to record the videos on my camera roll and then I went onto the app and it gave us the option to add videos from my camera roll onto the app.

After I cropped down my videos to the length I wanted I dragged them down into the clip edit. I also wanted to add special effects to mine and so I added special effects to make the advert look realistic. The advert also needed to have music so I went to the music section and had a range of music to choose from.

Then finally I had to convert the video form the app onto the blog and to do this I created a new blog post and went to the upload from computer section and then selected the video I wanted and it loaded onto the blog post.

1.5 course requirements

What I found is that there are a wide range of courses in this sector that have a wide range of requirements. There are some that require higher tuition fees than others while some do not have any tuition fees. All of these courses also have a wide range of different requirements that would benefits some students but won’t for others. They all have a very similar duration time as well with all of them bar the one being three years with the other one only being two years. They all have different types of information On there that tells the students a wide range of different things.

One of them gives you a run down of what every year is going to be like and what you are going to achieve in them years. Another one offers a course summary which is more detailed and gives a basic overview on what to expect over the years as a whole. One of them also asks for your digital portfolio which none of the others do. All of the others don’t give you any of this information and just tell you the things that you need to know such as grades.

Three of them also ask you to have a certain amount of tariff for you to enter the university. Two of them have 64 while the other is in the hundreds, The others are also asking for tariffs that are in the hundreds which would show how much competition there is to get into these places.

There are also three courses that ask you to have certain ALEVEL requirements for you to get into them. One of them asks  you for a BBC while another asks you for a CC. The other one has a range that you can get and the range is from BBC to BBB. The other two don’t ask for any requirements for ALEVELS.

Mindmaps

The purpose of these mind maps is to help the person reviewing this blog understand what is on the blog and what we have created over the past two years in Digital Media. The mind maps are broken down into different sections so one mind map has the different types of mediums that are on the blog and the many different things that we created for each one.

The other mind map tells you what different things you would expect to see on the blog. So on the blog there will be many photos, there would also be many different file types that would’ve been used to get the work onto the blog whether it’s a video or a picture or even an animation. There would also by many paper work on the blog that got done in my book. This paperwork would be done for all sorts of different things such as the Coca Cola advert or even the culture campaign.

SWOT analysis

File formats

Physical to digital

Tablet device- I use my tablet device to help get my work into a digital format. I would use paper to design things such as mind maps and mood boards and then I would take a picture of these pages so I can put onto my blog. In the camera role I would use the crop tool to crop down the picture to make it as clear and neat as possible. An example of when I had to do this would be when we where writing in our books at home and the work had to go onto the blog and so I took a picture of the work and then cropped it down in my camera role and added it to the blog.

For other types of work such as the culture campaign I had to email myself work that I done on things such as power-point and word. I did this because I was doing work at home and switching devices and the only way to access my work was through emailing myself so I can still do work at home. Sometimes I took a picture of my work I did on paper then I had to email the picture to myself so I can use that picture for my work.

For this culture campaign I would use paper for things such as thumbnails for what the cover layout would look like and to do that I had to create the thumbnails in my book then I would take a picture on my phone and on my camera role I would crop down the picture so it’s neat and tidy and then I would Email the picture to myself which then I would receive the picture on the computer, as that is what I was using to create my campaign, and I would copy and paste that image from my emails onto the PowerPoint that I was using.

LO1 1.1 what is a personal media profile

 Digital media 1.1

What is a personal media profile?

A personal media profile is another representation of a digital portfolio, but instead than just showcasing content, it may show testimonials, blogs or experiences which are relevant to the area the profile is aimed at.

A social media profile relates to having a Facebook, Instagram etc profile, which in this context relates to personal and social content, with no reference to employment purposes.

A digital portfolio is online, or even a portfolio of work on a DVD. It could hold a showreel, or  pieces of work in an electronic format.

Why do I need a personal media profile?

In a digital portfolio you include content that relates to your area of interest. This would be any work that I have done in digital media. Each post that is done on the digital portfolio must have images in them with detailed annotations that explain what the image is. This is so the person who is reviewing your work can easily understand it. On the portfolio there must be a variety of work and also an entire project that has been completed. For me this would be something like the campaign for change for unit 21. There must also be extracts from textbooks so that a viewer can understand where you are getting all of this from. When it comes to presenting your portfolio the best way to do it is through either a PDF or PowerPoint with high resolution so the work is easy to see and also to make sure to compress the large files. The most important thing about your own personal portfolio is that you check your individual course requirements and you include them onto it. Finally in order to get people interested in your portfolio you have to consider if it’s attention grabbing, does it show my ideas and development and does it flow.

Examples of personal media profiles: video and animation, graphic design, web design, photography.

Strengths and weaknesses of digital portfolios

Examples of digital portfolios: studio fiexen, RoandCo, active theory, locomotive, lusion

Report

Studio fiexen

Strengths: the explosion of colour and projects showcased on this site. There is also a talk section where you can ask studio fiexen a question which makes it very interactive and makes people want to know more about the studio.

No weaknesses

RoandCo

Strengths: The team offer beautifully crafted design, branding and creative direction solutions to a roster of clients predominantly in the fashion, beauty, tech and lifestyle sectors. The projects are presented in an almost magazine-like fashion. Allowing the viewer to cycle through split screen images, animated web presentations and full screen video.

Weaknesses: The complete lack of information on any project is a little irritating, but RoAndCo has created a well-crafted, memorable user experience nonetheless.

Active theory

Strengths: the active theory portfolio website is like entering a whole new world. The design embraces a moody, Blade Runner aesthetic throughout. They say that everything on the website works together beautifully. The studio keeps things clean for its project pages, with each example featuring a full-screen animation overlaid with short blurb and relevant links to further information, including detailed case studies hosted on Medium.

No weaknesses

Locomotive

Strengths: Playful animations bring the design to life throughout the site (not just on the homepage). It feels like effort and thought have gone into every element, from the quirky treatment of the hamburger menu to the unexpected animations on the About page.

No weaknesses

Lusion

Strengths: The site is full of delightful design touches, including a glowing dot that follows your cursor around, and an About page that overlays a running figure that responds to mouse events.

Weaknesses: It's a little disorienting at times, but entirely appropriate.
